Indonesian indie-pop. I didn’t even know it existed. That was before MySpace appeared out of the blue in the mid 2000s. My definition of indie was limited to mostly bands from UK, USA and Sweden. As I gradually connected with people around the world however, I started realizing there were these great subcultures everywhere. Great bands and great labels, and not to forget - great fans, popped out from their little corners of the world. From the Philippines, from Japan, from Korea and from Indonesia.
I remember hearing White Shoes & The Couples Company for the first time. Quite possibly the first Indonesian band I had ever heard. I sat by the fireplace, the windows covered with snow, and dreamed of visiting an Indonesian island. I felt strangely connected to music from far away, from a place I never had visited - and still hasn’t.
That same feeling caught me when I heard Darryl Wezy for the first time. With headphones on, I tried not to fall while walking the ice-covered streets of Oslo suburbia. If music where able to melt that ice, I’m sure it could not have resisted the warm sound of «Kemarau Terakhir".
There are certain bands and records that I’ve listened to a long time ago, but still seem to sound fresh and important whenever they return to my record player. Those albums that have timeless qualities, like being based on clean guitars, great melodies and well-thought-out arrangements. Darryl Wezy have these qualities. I can hear hints of Sarah Records and maybe some elements from James Iha’s first solo record and Josh Rouse’s «1972». But most of all I hear a great new indie-pop band. And they just happen to be from Indonesia.
